Microsoft and Scholastics Magic School Bus Lands on Mars
ReplyDeleteMicrosoft utilizes computer-based instruction through programs such as the Magic School Bus Lands on Mars. Scholastic and Microsoft work together to publish the Magic School Bus Activity Center CD-ROMS. This software can be utilized in the science classroom by involving multilevel games, stimulating activities, well-loved characters, clickable animations, and information bites that make kids want to keep playing and learning. This allows students from varying learning styles to fully absorb the curriculum.
Students who learn best through logical styles will seek answers to questions presented in the various games and will receive valuable feedback from the software program. This is visually stimulating for students and allows physical interactions through the action based activities as well as the hand and eye movements necessary to navigate throughout the software. During science experiments there will be verbal interactions between classmates. There will also be kinesthetic learning while performing the experiments. Students may also find programs like this to offer competition between one another and provide opportunities for cooperative learning.
Students will have the opportunity to reinforce their knowledge in specific science content areas such as learning about topics including oceans, dinosaurs, animals, and insects. The series also provides concept development and problem solving by using interactive games, activities, experiments, and tips. The students are able to work individually or as teams while using the software and during experiments in order to solve problems.
In my own classroom, this software can be used as an introduction and practice to science topics. This will engage students and allow them to have an interactive approach to learning. They can also visualize what is happening on Mars and other space related topics.

ReplyDeleteThe program I chose is JumpStart for math and reading. (www.knowledgeadventure.com). It is published by The Knowledge Adventure company. It provides a variety of activities for children of different ages. It can be used in school and home as well.
The activities help students practice and build essential skills, such as count numbers, spell, draw, color, solve problem, develop a story and others. This program presents the concepts very well for children and makes the learning fun.
In my classroom, I intend to use this program in different ways. I can use it as introduced a new concept for students. I also would like to make my students play a game to practice and emphasize what they have been learning to make them enjoy while learning.

I selected Mavis Beacon Keyboarding Kidz. Mavis Beacon Keyboarding Kidz is a software program to teach children how to type. Children have individualized lesson plans that accommodate students' speed of learning as well as having aspects that appeal to different learners. Visual learners can gain from the software's keyboard color system that indicates red keys for "need to practice" and green keys for mastery of those keys. Auditory learners will hear if they are incorrect from the software feedback as well as different music for students to select. Kinesthetic learners can play Mavis Beacon computer games that allow them to interact with the software.
ReplyDeleteIn addition, Mavis Beacon Keyboarding Kidz encourages knowledge reinforcement by layered lesson plans, where students start off with basic keys such as the ASDF keys and then utilize those skills for more advanced lessons. Students also gain an in-depth understanding of concepts by this reinforcement, as well as feedback from Mavis Beacon on their learning. Students have a chance to problem solve by playing games that not only reinforce concepts, but actively engage them as well.
I would use this software in a computer science class in the 5th and 6th grade levels to help students master typing so they can apply their skills to essay writing in other subjects.

ReplyDeleteThis is a web-based learning software program that is published by the odyssey company. It differentiates instructions for different learning styles, increase the skills in knowledge reinforcement, concept development and problem solving. This is because, it enables teachers possess the required digital accessories to address these issues (Klyuga and Sweller, 2005). This program highlights the areas in which the students need more practice and it recommends the appropriate learning style. These styles are dependent on age and grade levels.
This software differentiates instructions for different learning styles through various ways. Firstly, by assignment and assessment. This is because, the teachers got a variety of options to personalize instructions (Kalyuga and Sweller, 2005). For instance, by allowing students log onto the program and enter the name of their assignment. Secondly, it can differentiate through scaffolding, which enables students to have confidence.
Thirdly, the program differentiates instructions after a marked assessment. This is because, all the details of the students are registered in the program and their results will dictate the kind of instruction and learning style that will help them. Fourthly, this program uses the normal learning activities to differentiate learning styles (Kalyuga and Sweller, 2005). Here, some unique mistakes are recorded in a certain learning activity and then a correction of the teaching style used is made.
This software increases skills in knowledge reinforcement, concept
development and problem solving by allowing students and teachers access the internet on current issues. This leads to development of their minds and they become aware of what is going on in the recent world (Kalyuga and Sweller, 2005). They also gain problem solving skills since they can search for information on certain problems and learn how to deal with such. This equips the students with enough material for new concept development or an additional knowledge on the subject involved.
I would use this software as a research tool since it enables one log onto the internet and access a lot of information. This will help me get information about my subjects and also study ahead of the teacher. This is because, all the information concerning the subjects is available on the internet. Also, I will use this program to rank myself in class. Since all the names of my classmates are registered, it will be possible for me to see my ranking after any class activity or test. This will help me know my progress and also help me in setting realistic targets.

ReplyDelete• How does the software differentiate instruction for different learning styles?
The software Pathblazer by Learning Odyssey was a program designed for teaching the concept of multiplication for elementary aged students. I thought the program best accommodated abstract and concrete sequential learners. For students that require a more visual manner of learning, the program used a number line and visual groupings of objects to demonstrate multiplication. To accommodate the needs of a verbal learning style, the program included a written story problem.
• Does the software increase skills in knowledge reinforcement, concept
development, and or problem solving? How?
The program was more orientated on concept development, however I felt that it could be used to demonstrate how they might utilize multiplication as a problem solving tool.
• What is the name of the company that publishes the software product?
Learning Odyssey
• How will you use this software in your own classroom? Why?
If I were to use this program within my classroom, I would use it on a projector for the viewing of the entire class. When the class was through with the demonstration, I would break the class into groups of varying abilities and learning styles and I would ask them to create a story problem that could be solved using multiplication and then I would have each group pass their problem on to a different group to solve. I would encourage each group to use a number line to solve the multiplication problems. For homework, I would give each student a worksheet with 20 multiplication problems. I chose to use this program as a class to make it a more interactive process. By breaking the students into groups of various learning types and abilities, the students are able to help one another different insight and ways of understanding the concept. Additionally, I would not assign the students to view this program at home for homework because many students do not have at home internet access.

ReplyDelete1.Differentiated Instruction is a teaching philosophy that employs teachers to personalize or tailor their instruction to each student's needs. Cobb suggests that, no one learning styles works for all students, so differentiated instruction is the best method for teaching using multiple learning styles (2010). Teachers are able to make accommodations for individual student levels, customize testing times and, students are able to set their own pace during their work.
2. When using this program, students work together to find the solution to comprehensive problems. The reading program has been proven to increases comprehension and reading skills. The students will review different concepts as they attempt to hit the teachers mastery level. These standards help concept development and problem solving.
3. This program was created by Compass Learning Odyssey.
4. I plan to use this program in my classroom as a method to teach students with different abilities, learning styles, and levels. Students would work together to examine and solve problems collaboratively. I would use this method to increase reading levels by reviewing concepts and mastering skills. In a technology based society, this program has the ability to really engage students more than direct instruction.
